When I think of Advent, I think of waiting. Not any ordinary waiting, but the kind of waiting while in pain and never knowing when things will look up. I cannot wrap my mind around the idea of all the brokenness that is happening right now and has occurred in all of history. But at one moment that reverberates through time, we welcome a Child who will be our Deliverer, Liberator, Salvation and our Shalom. Even in the night when Jesus was born, there was mourning on the earth. All the mothers whose sons were murdered in the nights following—we still mourn those lives and the Scriptures mourn those lives while telling the story of Jesus’ birth. Yet the dawn is breaking, and we see a glorious picture, pregnant with hope, of what is and what is to come. A deliverance from the evil, brokenness, and cursed land. He brings healing to our dusty earth, binds our wounds, and sets us free. We have seen a glimpse of that dawn, but we are still waiting, with our hands held out in prayer.

And we pray, deliver us from Evil.
